PROS:
- Just came back from a 10 day trip to Yellowstone and Moab. This was a nervous purchase due to the cost however we are very satisfied and would purchase from Allen Sports again in the future. I drive a 2005 Ford Torus and my girlfriend has a 2006 Chevy Malibu. This bike rack works perfect for both vehicles. Only downside, you must take off front tires of both bikes. What worked best for us was to set the first bike on with the back tire on the passenger side. We also bungied bikes to rack for additional support.
- I love my bike rack. I used it on my Honda Civic 2012 SI Sedan. This bike rack is very sturdy. It has thick pipes & mounts securely to my trunk. It even fit over the tiny spoiler glued on the back of my trunk lid. I also added pictures of my bike with rear shocks. I didn’t see any bikes like mine hooked up to this and I was afraid it wouldn’t hang on the support bars. The mount seemed very sturdy on my trunk. This is exactly what I wanted for 1 bike. 2 bikes seems tight but probably doable. I am impressed with the quality for the price I paid. Also it folds flat for easy storage. I just leave it in my tiny trunk.
CONS:
- It’s not bad. It gets the job done. The metal hooks are not padded or rubberized. I just wrapped them with electrical tape to prevent scratching. It would be nice if the trunk hooks were rubberized to protect car paint.
- The weight of the bikes had compressed the two foam pieces enough so that the bare metal was rubbing against the trunk’s angular midpoint ‘ridge’. The metal was rubbing against this point and wore through the paint here. Bummer. The clips, which we thought would be fine after wrapping them in electrical tape, also damaged the paint in the crevice to which they were attached (just the side clips).
